Abstract

The aims of this research are to (1) identify and describe the different types of slang words and (2) analyse the meaning of slang words found in the movie Avengers: Endgame. The data were gathered through observation. This study uses a qualitative descriptive method to describe slang words or phrases from films. This study used the Kipfer and Chapman (2007) theory to determine the types of slang words and the Leech (1981) theory to determine the types of meaning. The finding shows that, there are 58 slang words in the movie Avengers: Endgame. Only five of the seven types of meaning proposed by Leech (1981) exist in slang words. There are 20 conceptual meanings, 19 social meanings, 2 connotative meanings, 15 affective meanings, and 2 reflection meanings. Collocative and thematic meaning were the two types of meaning that were not found.
